Jonathan Vogt, aka DJ Booom, 25, of Rochester is a DJ with a mission.
"It's a sad state we're in. I'm trying to rebuild hip-hop in this city," he says. "I'm trying to bring hip-hop back to Rochester, which is pretty weak here. Everyone just listens to the Top-40 stuff you hear on the radio."
Vogt, who DJs full-time, wants to bring back an interest in live hip-hop shows.
"There are hippie shows (folk rock and roots reggae shows) and stuff like that people will go check out, but people aren't going to local rap shows," he says. "I want to get people to go out and enjoy local music rather than go out and get wasted and cause trouble."
Along with spinning on Tuesdays at Dub Land Underground, Vogt says he brings in a live, local hip-hop act once a month at the club. He begins a summer tour in July, bringing his vinyl and turntables to cities such as Buffalo, Albany, Syracuse and Hartford, Conn.
What got you started?
I started off in the orchestra when I was a young kid, playing the cello. So the interest in music was always there. Then I fell into my dad's records.
What's the hardest part about DJing?
The hardest part about DJing is feeling out the crowd. If you walk into a club you don't know, you've got to feel out the crowd. I'm an underground hip-hop guy. I don't like the Timbalands and the Justin Timberlakes. I like to play the underground stuff, but people don't like that here.
And what's your favorite part?
I just like getting out and meeting new people and having a good time. It's definitely not about the money, that's for sure.
